It’s that time of year again, the biggest awards show of the year is upon us. 2013 brought some of the best movies I have ever seen and there are many worthy nominees this year. For the first time, I have not only seen every movie nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, but also all the movies with acting nominees. These are my picks, who I would give the awards to if it was only up to me. As I point out below, some of them are different that who is expected to win, but I make sure to explain why. With that cleared up, I present my 2014 Oscar predictions.
Corruption on the stock exchange is very real and no one captured that better in the 1990’s than Jordan Belfort. So when Martin Scorsese decides to tell that story, he goes all out with three-hours of spectacular chaos. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, Jean Dujardin, Cristin Milioti, Jon Faverau and Rob Reiner, this movie follows convicted fraud felon Belfort, and how he built and lost his empire. Everyone in high school English at one point has to read The Great Gatsby but it has never been given a definitive film adaptation. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as the title character, with Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher and Jason Clarke joining him in Baz Luhrmann’s fantastical 1920’s New York. Quentin Tarantino returned to theaters this Christmas with another gory, vulgar and hilarious film: Django Unchained. The director, known for such classics as Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds has moved onto the spaghetti western genre with a very powerful take on southern slavery in 1858. Starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson, Django Unchained follows two bounty hunters as the look to rescue a slave from the inhabitants of an evil slave owner. You can watch the trailer and read my review bellow.
