What happens when a man falls in love with his phone? That is the fundamental question that Spike Jonze explores in his new film, her. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, Chris Pratt and the voice of Scarlett Johansson, the movie follows the emotional relationship between Theodore Twombly (Phoenix) and his operating system, Samantha (Johansson). There is something special about the Academy Awards. The glitz and glamour of the event, along with the history of the medium, make each Oscar ceremony stand out. For the first time since I started following the award circuit in 2009, I was able to see all the Best Picture nominees before the big day. And for the first time I reviewed the films on this site and can now make sound predictions. Read on to see who I think will take home Oscar tonight.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” has been on many critics’ list of potential Oscar winners, but after having seen it, I don’t feel the same way. The film tells the story of Freddie Quell, played by Joaquin Phoenix, a man looking to find himself after World War II. He falls under the wing of Lancaster Dodd, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, and becomes an important subject in Dodd’s quest to create a new religion. Amy Adams also appears as Dodd’s wife who fully supports her husband’s ambitions. Watch the trailer and read my review after the jump.
